Journal Prompts to Help You Find the Magic Moments in the Mundane

Weekly spreads are a staple in my creative journal. I use them as a log to write down little snippets of each day. By the time Sunday rolls around, it looks like I had a really interesting and exciting week! But if you look closer, it's just everyday, mundane stuff. Keeping it in a journal like this makes it feel less so.

A bright colorful weekly journal spread decorated with Halloween themed stickers, scrapbook paper, markers and washi tape. The end result is a fun collage style.

Taking the time to reflect on each day, identify the special parts to write down, and decorate the pages with cute stickers, colorful washi tapes, fun stamps, photos and scraps collected makes every day feel significant.

We pack so much into our time that life often feels like one big blur or we get comfortable in our routines and each day feels like nothing special, but breaking it down like this can help you appreciate the small, individual moments more.

In case you need some help thinking of things to write in your own journal, here are a few prompts I put together based on the things I journaled about on these pages. Save them somewhere you can easily refer back to when you're feeling like life is stuck on repeat and you need some guidance to see the noteworthy parts.

Everyday Journal Prompts:

  • Did you exercise today? How did that go? Was it enjoyable? Really hard? Did you hit a new record? Did you walk a new route or see anything unusual on your regular one?
  • Did you watch anything today? A TV series? Movie? Seven hours of TikTok? Did you like it? Or were you disappointed by the ending?
  • Is there a word or sentence that sums up the day you had? Or how you felt today?
  • Did you work on any projects? Maybe you painted a pumpkin? Or made cupcakes? Or organized your pantry? Or maybe you decorated for Halloween? I bet you took a picture!
  • Did anything notable happen at work? Something you're proud of? Maybe something that went wrong? Did anyone new start or get fired? Any fun office gossip?
  • Did you buy anything today that you don't routinely spend money on (like groceries)? Did you try a new coffee drink at your regular spot? Did you make a big purchase or grab a candy bar at the gas station for a little treat? Did you spend all morning shopping online instead of working on your new product offering?
  • Did you talk to anyone today? Maybe catch up with an old friend or your mom? Did you have an amusing conversation in line at the pharmacy? Or a weird interaction with your neighbor? Did you have a really good time talking to your significant other about an interesting topic?
